British soldiers in action in the densely wooded Aisne country.

Major Alexander Kirkland Robb, a veteran of the Tirah campaign on the North West Frontier in India, is buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, near Laon. The bodies of his would-be rescuers, John Nevison and Frederick Rutherford, were not recovered and they are now commemorated on the memorial to the missing of the Aisne campaign at La Ferté sous Jouarre.

On the II Corps front north of Vailly the fighting was equally severe as the Germans tried and failed to break the deadlock. Soldiers of the South Lancashire Regiment were heavily attacked by Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 56 and Infanterie regiment Nr. 64 and drove them back, but not without heavy loss both to defender and attacker alike. The official history of the latter German formation describes 20 September as a ‘hard, blood soaked day’. It identifies on this date a change in the character of the campaign, with the beginning of trench warfare. Describing the events of that day it states:
